Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year

Fry Club JFC would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and hope that everyone has a safe, warm and dry holiday (unlike this Father Christmas!) See you in 2014.

Fry Club JFC wish you all a very Merry Christmas

Frys U4, U5 & U6's Ready For Christmas!

In preparation for the Xmas break, Fry Club U4's, U5's and U6's held their last training session before the holiday break.  Many were sporting a festive look (although where did Dave & Andy get their big ears from?) and a fun session was had by all with sweets and drinks included in the activities.  Our youngest teams are actively looking for more players so if you would like to join Dave with his U8's, please call on 07717 664633, or for the U6's and below, please call Andy on 07710 881441. For more on the U4's, U5's and U6's, click on their team page links or for more on the U8's, click on their Team_Page.

Frys Help Raise £750 For Children's Hospice!

In 2011, Fry Club U15 Colts were inspired by Barcelona in their fundraising ideas. Rather than be paid for kit sponsorship, Barcelona paid Unicef £1 million per year to display their logo, and Frys decided to follow a similar route. Joining in with the Children’s Hospice South West based at Charlton Farm, Wraxall in the South West of Bristol, Frys proudly displayed the CHSW logo for their final two seasons, collecting money via collection tins at each game. Frys kicked off the fundraising drive at their game away to Yate Utd on Sunday 13th November 2011, and closed the collection at the main Club Presentation on Sunday 16th June 2013, by which time they had collected £250. Frys are also very grateful to DriBuild Interior Solutions (who sponsored their home shirt), for donating the money to have the away shirts printed, and for offering to add double the amount raised, meaning that on Friday 1st November, team captain Sam Kipling was able to present the Hospice with a cheque for £750, as well as a framed replica of the shirt worn for the two seasons. For more on the history of that Frys team, click on their Team_Page or for the Hospice, on the website of the Children's Hospice South West.

U11's Look To Build On Positive Start!

Fry Club Under 11's, having started games, are now looking to build on their positive approach for players.  As reported two weeks previously, the U11's are looking for a few more players, and have recruited one new player already on the back of that story.  They now look for a few more to give them the right size squad to make this season both fun and competitive. If you would like to play, call Mark on 0117 9073888. Below are some photos of their second match, and for more, click on the Thornbury Town link!  We also have photos from Highridge to view as well! Frys/Somerdale Old Boy In FA Cup!

Fry Club again saw an ex-player playing in the FA Cup this year.  Tom Hamblin, who played for the Club from 1995 to 2003 and is now plying his trade at Ryman League side Wealdstone FC, faced AFC Hornchurch in the 3rd qualifying round on October 12th, but unfortunately lost 3-0.  Tom was captain of the Frys side from U12 to U16, leading his team to an U13 Division 2 title, U15 Division 1 Runners-Up, and U16 League Cup & County Cup Runners-Up.  Tom was also the captain of the Gloucester County side and after a short spell with the senior Frys team, went on to Mangotsfield, Bristol Manor Farm and then Gloucester in 2006, making his debut against Maidenhead Utd on the 19th August of that year. He signed for Wealdstone in September of this season when his work moved to that area. For more on the team that Tom was captain of, click on their Team Page, or for other past teams, click the Previous Teams link.

Frys U11's Are Playing, And Want You!

Fry Club Under 11's have finally taken off.  For various reasons we never had a team at this year.... that is until now!  Ilo & Mark have worked tirelessly to get a team up and running, and as of Sunday 3rd November 2013, played their first ever match!  What we need now though are a few more players to bolster the squad, and to ensure that they have a long and enjoyable playing experience.  If you would like to play, call Mark on 0117 9073888. Below are some photos of their first ever match, and for more, click on the Broadwalk link!  For more on the U11's, click on their Team Page.

Somerdale Manager Passes Away.
It is with the deepest of sadness that Fry Club JFC have learned of the death of Richard Olds.  Richard managed at the Club back in the early 80's, taking a team which included current Frys Senior Secretary Steve Curtis.  This all done whilst his youngest son Stuart played a year below, and his eldest son Julian a year above.  Richard was also very well known in the local community as a local butcher. Our thoughts are with all of his family at this sad time.

U4's, U5's & U6's Have Fun In The Sun!
Here at Frys, we are firmly of the belief that football should be first and foremost FUN!  That starts at the training sessions, as our joint Under 6 and Under 5 (and Under 4 and occasionally Under 3) squad found out.  Click on the link for some more images of an FA Level 1 coaching routine called Robin Hood.  For more on the Under 5 and Under 6 teams, click on their respective team page links.

U10's Triumph At Deerswood
On Sunday 21st July, Fry Club U9's (now U10's) went to the Deerswood 6's Tournament, which they won, beating Bristol Rovers Supporters in the final. In the U10 League structure, Bristol Rovers are two divisions above Frys and won their opening game 10-1, making this victory all the more amazing.  Well done lads! We hope to get a photo of the team on the day, but for now here is the latest squad line-up. For more on the U10's, click on their Team Page.

It's Not All About Playing Football!
As part of team building and socialising, in August of 2013, Fry Club U15 Girls got together for a spot of pre-season Paintballing at Hamburger Hill, a local activity centre.  The Girls had a great day out, and this event reminds us all that it's not just about playing football, but also about socialising and building friendships. For more on the U15 Girls, visit their Team Page.

All Team's Fixtures Are Now Online
As each team finalises their squads, the various Leagues complete their work, including publishing the upcoming season fixtures.  Full-Time, which is administered by the FA, is the preference for the majority of Leagues now, and the Bristol U18 & U21 Football Combination (U18 Colts & U18 Juniors), the Avon Youth League (U15's, U14's & U13's), the Bristol Girls League (U15's) and the Hanham Minor League (U11's, U10's & U9's) are no different.  The U18 teams kick off next weekend, with the rest following on the next Sunday, so to see your upcoming fixtures, click on the various links or go to your team page via the Current Teams link on the left, and browse away.

It's Not All "Jumpers For Goalposts".....

Like every Club around the Country, indeed the World, we at Fry Club JFC volunteer our time so that the local community children can have a safe, structured game.  Part of that safe structure is the administration behind the game from FIFA to UEFA to The FA, to our County Somerset FA and to our Leagues, Hanham Minor League, Bristol Girl's League, Avon Youth League and Bristol U18 & U21 Combination. Also there are various initiatives designed to make the experience safer, informative and above all more fun.  We affiliate to many of those including the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and Childline.  Also the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) along with ThinkUKnow? We also support Kick It Out and Respect and offer County advice on how Clubs can Improve Your Respect Score.  We also offer information related to the changing game such as the FA Youth Development Proposal and Gloucester's Youth Development Review.  And you thought we just played football!

U9's Easter Tour - Part 2

Fry Club U9's (now U10's) headed down to Butlins at Minehead last Easter for an organised Football Tour.  During the weekend there were various opposition teams from around the country, and copious amounts of alcohol drunk (we assume by the parents, not the boys?). Here are a few photos from Day 2, when Frys played against Oadby Owls and Cresswell Wanderers, and then had their medals presented by John Hartson.  Click the links for the full Day 2 Match Report, for Day 2 Photos or for the U10 Team Page.

U16 Colts Leave It Late Against The Managers!

Our traditional end of season encounter was the Manager's Match.  This year for the first time ever there were three U16 teams as Frys had so many players, and two of those teams contested the day, the Managers having to draw upon other sources to field two teams.  The Colts faced a combination of Parents, Managers and U20 ex-players.  The Colts had fun rather than compete, and it was only when they realised they were losing with five minutes to go that they took it seriously and scored two quick-fire goals to win the game!  To read the U16 Colts Match Report click on that link.  To see photographs of that game, click on the U16 Colts v Managers link.  To see more on Past Manager's Matches, click the link.  For more on the U16 Colts, click on their Team Page.

U16 Juniors Run The Managers Close!

Our traditional end of season encounter was the Manager's Match.  This year for the first time ever there were three U16 teams as Frys had so many players, and two of those teams contested the day, the Managers having to draw upon other sources to field two teams.  The Juniors faced a combination of Parents, Managers and Frys Senior team, including the 1st Team Manager and the highest scorer in the Club.  They performed magnificently and were unlucky to lose 3-2.  To see photos of that game, click on the U16 Juniors v Managers link.  To see more on Past Manager's Matches, click the link.  For more on the U16 Juniors, click on their Team Page.

Deaf-Friendly Football Club Project!

This week Fry Club JFC take the opportunity to remind everyone that we as a Club are open to as wide an audience as possible.  Part of that audience are deaf children, and our aim is to give all deaf children and young people the chance to play football in a safe, supportive and fun environment. Whether you are a young deaf person, parent, coach, budding coach, volunteer, player or official, you can help to ensure that every deaf child has the opportunity to participate in the great game.  To watch a short video about the Deaf-Friendly Football Club (DFFC) Project you can click on the link, or on the logo to the right!

Night Matches At The End Of The Season!

As the long Winter closes, and Spring is in the air, the arrival of British Summer time sees the final rounds of matches include evening games, and Frys are no different, with one team or another playing almost every night of the week to catch up! Our U16 Colts are an example of this with three consecutive Friday night fixtures, the first of which saw them play St Aldhelms at Frys, and you can see Photos of this game.  For more on the U16 Colts, click on their Team Page.

On show again in Fry Club at the moment are the plans for the whole of the Somerdale site redevelopment, and available here for the first time are the Official Plans from Taylor Wimpey available to download, although please be aware that the file is 25Mb in size so may take a while.  We have now created a New Web Page devoted to the site redevelopment which includes a timeline of events from the original Cadbury decision to close the factory, and any news related to the redevelopment will in future be available on the new web page.

Can Football Unite The World?

This week, Frys looks at the impact that football plays in bringing together diverse, and sometimes adversarial people, uniting groups, that in some cases have been at war.  This BBC article looks at the career of Rudi Gutendorf, whose long and colourful career includes managing Rwanda just after the civil war and genocide, and how his role played a small part in reuniting that nation. Another BBC article looks at how both Crusaders and Newington in North Belfast are running a Cross-Community Football Project hoping to unite a religiously divided community. Also there is Football United, who recognises the importance of football as a universal language and helps young refugees become a part of their new communities in New South Wales, Australia. Total Football look at World Peace Day, and how last year, on September 21, there were more than 3,000 games of football played between otherwise conflicting sides in all of the 192 UN member countries. Finally to this FIFA article, looking at football Uniting Multicultural Australia.

Yes We Did!

Last week we asked the question, "Will We Ever Play Again?", based on the fact that our U16 Colts had not played League football for a quarter of a year.  Well, we did, and we won, 2-1 away to AEK Boco.  What's more, five more Frys teams were involved in League football, as we all look to put this barren spell of action behind us.  To prove the fact, the U16's even took Photographs of the match, and you can also read the Match Report.  For more on the U16 Colts, click on their Team Page.

The conditions made it interesting....

Will We Ever Play Again?

With the rain, then snow, then rain, then the wet, sodden ground, it's amazing that even a few games have taken place! On Sunday 17th February 2013, Frys U16 Colts hope to play AEK Boco, their first league match since 18th November 2012, THIRTEEN WEEKS earlier, or put another way, A QUARTER OF A YEAR!  They are not alone however.  In their division, there have been just TWO League games played in that time.  Looking back to last season, we take a look at what they did last winter when this happened, hiring the indoor facility at Whitchurch for a Fun Session.  For more on the U16 Colts, click on their Team Page.

Frys U18 Colts Going Strong!

Frys U18 Colts (playing this season as Juniors in their division) are settling in to their new role.  With a mixed team of U17 & U18 players they took their time to gain an understanding with each other, but are now settled into their season.  Here are photos from their game just before Christmas against Bristol Telephones which they won 4-3.  For more visit their Team Page, or you can see the other U18's, the Juniors, (playing this season as Colts in their division) by visiting their Team Page.

What Constitutes Cheating?

With various sections of the media vociferously protesting recently over the Luis Suarez Handball Goal Against Mansfield, and his admission to Diving Against Stoke, we at Frys ask, "What Is Cheating? Suarez is no stranger to controversy after his last minute goal-line handball took the World Cup 2010 Quarter Final between Uruguay and Ghana to penalties, which Uruguay won, but ask yourself this, if an England player did that in the last minute of the World Cup Final and it meant we won, how many people would be unhappy, and how many would say 'it's part of football'? So, What Is Cheating? How about shirt pulling? How about the Ball-Boy not returning the ball to the field of play with the home team winning? How about any deliberate foul in the game? Surely all of these examples are cheating, and yet we concentrate on hand-ball and diving! More than that, we focus on foreign player 'cheating', as no one batted an eyelid when Michael Owen won penalties in consecutive World Cups against Argentina! Until All Forms Of Cheating are criticised and punished equally, we cannot consciously blame players who gain the advantage in certain situations such as diving, nor blame players trying to get the ball back, when a culture exists at Clubs to delay the restart. Ex-Frys Player Scores Against Liverpool In The FA Cup.

Matt Green, a player who started his playing career with Frys Colts/Somerdale Wanderers, scored against Liverpool FC in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup on Sunday 6th January, live on TV on ESPN, and can be watched with no sound via YouTube. Matt first started playing football under the current U16 Colts Manager back in 1995 as an Under 9, before joining his friends in the newly formed Fry's Bees under Glyn Rossiter.  As a professional, Matt has had spells at Newport County, Cardiff City, Oxford Utd (Scoring at Wembley), Torquay Utd and Darlington. Now with Mansfield Town, 26 year old Matt is scoring regularly and attracting interest from Championship Clubs.
