2015

Frys Enjoy Christmas (As Always)!

Fry Club JFC had a fantastic Christmas party over the weekend before Santa's travels.  On the afternoon of Sunday 20th December 2015, the U7's, the U8's and the U9's all came together for a great afternoon of music, fun and games, topped off by a visit from Father Christmas.  Then in the evening, the U10's, the U11 Colts, the U11 Juniors, the U12 Colts and the U12 Juniors followed suit.  All of those teams would like to extend a huge thanks to Welfare Officer Sandra Yeoman for the hard work that she undertook organising everything.  The U8's had already gotten into the mood on the Friday before at training, everyone training in some form of Christmas attire! Fry Club JFC would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  See you in 2016.

Bristol Rovers Mascot!

One of Fry's U8 players was lucky enough recently to help lead out Bristol Rovers for their Remembrance Sunday match.  It was the FA Cup Round 1 match against Southern League Premier Division side Chesham United.  He was lucky enough to help lead out the team, play a short session with the other mascots on the pitch, have photos with all of the players and the Club Mascot, have a behind the scenes tour and finally watch the match from a VIP vantage point.  The only downside to the day was that Bristol Rovers lost 1-0.  To see more photos, click on the Bristol Rovers Mascot link.  For more on his Frys team, click on their Team Page.

U12 Colts Win The Local Derby!

The U12 Colts recently hosted Keynsham Town in a closely fought contest.  Bidding to stay unbeaten they went 0-1 down, before rallying to take a 3-1 lead, only for a resurgent Keynsham to take it to the wire by getting one back, however they managed no more and the Colts stayed top of the League.  For photos of the game, click on the Keynsham Town link. Ex-Frys Player, World Finalist!

An ex-Frys player is taking the world of eSports by storm! James Baker joined Frys as an U6 in 2002 playing for the Colts team.  At U11 his dad Maurice started the Wanderers team assisted by James' older brother Tom, who took over the Manager role at U14.  James received his Les Stroud 10 Year Loyalty Award in 2012.  James started out signing for Team SK.  It didn't work out so after a year he and two others went independent and formed Team Bob? (named because an eSports commentator had asked why there were no basic team names like Bob?).  They were signed by Team Dignitas just before the European Championships held in Prague in October 2015 where they came runners-up, qualifying for the Blizzcon World Finals in Los Angeles in November 2016, where they gained revenge over the European Champions in the semi-final, unfortunately losing to the American Champions in the final, winning $120,000 for being the second best team in the world.  Team Dignitas now are aiming to be the best team in the world! If you read the Blogs, most commentators agree that James is the best Kharazim in the world! Good luck James. For a look at James' eSport history, click on his eSports Page. To look back on James' career at Frys, click on his various team pages. ##UPDATE## James went to the Dreamhack Winter Invitational this week in Sweden and reached the semi-finals, with new players in the team and little time to practice.  It bodes well for the future.

Ex-Frys player Ben Watt is well on his way to becoming a professional sports and fitness model.  Ben won the Miami Pro Fitness Model Teen Category at the Alban Arena in St Albans on October 25th 2015, and is looking to make more of this opportunity. Miami Pro Championships is a fitness modelling & bodybuilding federation that helps promote athletes & models to get recognised in the fitness industry. Ben joined Frys in 2003 playing up an age for his Team.  He then moved the Juniors team as an U10 before joining the Colts team as an U15, and as an U16 Ben won his Les Stroud 10 Year Loyalty Award. Frys Remember Warmer Times!

Now that the nights are getting darker, the days are getting colder and it's clear that winter is coming, we look back to sunnier times and warmer climes when traveling around the local area to play tournaments was the highlight of the weekend. Our U16's won at both the Brislington and the Bridgwater Wolves tournaments, and had great fun at the same time! For more on the U16's, click on their Team Page.  Unfortunately due to the new Clubhouse build, we were unable to hold our own tournament, however next year, look out for the Spring Bank Holiday weekend!

Before We Had Technology...

Back in the day... yes, it's time to look back again, and in a season that has seen Frys introduce a dedicated Facebook page and Twitter feed, we look back to how we used to disseminate information, and in those days it was by good old fashioned Newsletter!  Produced between 1998 and 2001 by a dedicated parent called Graham Knight, these 11 short-lived publications were how teams were able to find out what other teams were doing. We only have copies of 9 of the 11, so if anyone has a copy of edition 1 or 5 then please get in contact. When Graham became too busy no one else had time to continue, and so it wasn't until 2007 when Paul Tompkins launched the Club website (now this Historical one) that we once again had mass coverage.  If you are interested in joining any of the Fry Club Teams then please navigate your way to the relevant age group via Team Navigation.

Sometimes You Play Amongst Yourselves!

The season is now well underway and Frys teams are doing well and having fun.  Sometimes however the fixture list leaves you with a free weekend, and what do you do?  Last season our current U8's decided to have a game between themselves to practice and have fun, and photographs of the Reds v Blues can be found by clicking the link.  For more on the U8's click on their Team Page.

Frys U7's Finish With A Win!

Fry Club U7's have reached the end of their first season of matches, ending with a win against Ashton.  Unlike most other teams this team are two years behind with only two of the players with Frys as U6's and only one with Frys as an U5, whereas other teams have been together for three seasons.  That said the 18 players have constantly learned and improved together.  You can read Match Reports from every game and see photos from six of the 22 matches, as well as finding out more on the U7's by clicking on their Team Page.

Dave & Tony Bow Out In Style!

Fry Club U18 Colts made Club History by beating Emersons Green Wanderers in the final of the League Plate Final on Sunday 26th April. It was Dave Gooding & Tony Harper's final match in charge of the U18's and ended a very successful 5 years together:  2010-11 their U15 team Won Their Division. 2011-12 and their U16 team Won Their Division. 2012-13 they then went forward as mainly U17's and finished a very creditable 4th in the U18 League. 2013-14 with the addition of new U17's from the previous year's Colts, Juniors & Wanderers teams adding to the squad they finished Runners-Up in their Division. 2014-15 and a few more players joined to see them Win Their Division and with added photos, Win The Plate Final. You can also download an 8Mb copy of the Plate Final Programme. Indeed this is not the first time Dave has tasted U18 success. Dave was half of the 2002-04 U18 Management Team who took the U18's to League Cup Runners-Up, meaning Dave has been involved in all of the U18 successes that this Club has achieved, and we hope that they both will stay involved in the Club. Frys Progression Pathway

One of the great aspects of playing for Frys, is the fact that you can join as an U5, and play your way through the U6's, U7's, U8's, U9's, U10's, U11's, U12's, U13's, U14's, U15's, U16's, into the U18's, hopefully then onto the U21's, something that we are looking to set up as part of the new Club, before moving on into the Senior Sections and playing Adult Football.  This season the four main adult teams had a Club photograph taken, and many of the faces contained played for Frys when they were younger, with at least 15 ex-players or managers in this photo alone!  There are also two Old Boys teams containing many more ex-Somerdale/Frys players.

Jack's Final Game For Frys

Jack Jenkin had a pleasant surprise when he turned up to play for his team in a friendly game on Sunday 22nd March.  It was Jack’s last game for Fry Club JFC Under 10’s before moving to London where his parent are starting new careers. Team coaches  Andy Edwards and Nathan Goodhind made Jack the Captain for the game and also presented Jack with a team shirt signed by all the players and coaches, Jack was also presented with a memento of the Club and his fellow players formed a guard of honour for his entry on to the pitch.  Jack started playing for Fry Club Junior JFC when he was Four years old as a soccer tot firstly with Andy Glover and Bernie Grimes before Andy Edwards and Nathan Goodhind took over coaching the side.  To celebrate Jack's contribution to the side there was a cake to munch on after the game for all of the players. For more on the U10's, click on their Team Page.

When Two Teams Came From One Group

We look back to the late 1990's and early part of this century when two teams drew on one group.  Back then we had just switched from the Saturday run Bristol Junior League to the Sunday run Avon Youth League (where we all now play our youth boys football) from 1999 to 2002 Dave Gooding managed his U14's to U16's, and at the same time Andy Glover managed his U13's to U15's, Andy's team going on to U16's until 2003.  The reason for this was that many players were from August birthdays, and back then they were the youngest in their school year, but eldest in the football year, a situation that has now been rectified. There were also players from the younger age who were simply good enough to play up.  From those times we have the original Match Reports.  Written by Graham Knight, a dry witted and insightful author and includes the legendary Green 'Un, encompassing five Match Reports across twelve pages and covering both age groups as well as stats, results, tables and comment.  Available for the first time as well, photographs from some of their team tours to Warmwell, including many from their game as U15's against Weymouth Cougars.  Also available for the first time on Andy Glover's page, scans of every tournament program that they entered as a team as well as a variety of Newspaper clippings.  You will also find photographs from most of their team presentation nights.   Take a look at Dave's Team Page as well as Andy's Team Page for a great nostalgic look back at players who themselves now have children taking their own steps into the footballing world. For more on other past teams, click on the Completed Teams link.

The Dangers Of Dehydration!

Fry Club look at the dangers of dehydration this week in one of our occasional looks at the wider picture surrounding sport.  Despite all Frys Managers urging players and parents to bring enough liquids each week to both matches and training, there are still players turning up with no form of hydration, and perhaps this is due to not enough being known about the dangers.  This BBC web page takes a look at what is dehydration?  In this excellent Guardian article, they explore the issues surrounding the deaths of six people in South Africa during a recruitment fitness test. This Sports Performance Bulletin explores reasons why any athlete, football or other, needs to keep hydrated during exercise.  This USA Football web page examines the signs of dehydration.   Then we look at a counter-point in this Telegraph article which looks at Exercise-Associated Hyponatraemia (EAH), caused by drinking too much water.  Finally we link to the official NHS web page for dehydration to get the official health service advice.  Stay hydrated!

Always bring a drink to training and matches

Frys U7's Continuously Improve!

Fry Club U7's continue to improve as a team.  Despite being two years behind most other teams due to the majority of the players' late arrival to football, they continue to learn to play football the right way, and their results in friendlies, whilst not publishable under the new FA guidelines (available at both the Kids Football and St George's Park pages), are going in the right direction, with a few wins in recent months, and the other games getting closer and closer.  Looking back to the 5th of October, you can see photos of an earlier game where the signs of improvement were beginning to show against Hanham Athletic. For more on the U7's, click on their Team Page.

Frys U5's & U6's Train In The Warm!

Fry Club U5's & U6's have moved inside for the coldest part of winter training.  Normally the U5's & U6's train on a Saturday morning on the grass at Frys as can be seen in the photo to the right, however for the past few winters they have moved into Keynsham Leisure Centre on a Sunday morning so that the children can continue to learn football without the distraction of freezing wind and rain.  Looking back to warmer times, there are a selection of Sunny Training photographs taken last October on a warmer day. Frys U11 Juniors Continue To Progress

Bernie first started at the Club by assisting Martin McAlpine who ran the U7, U8 & U9 mini-soccer introduction age group.  The following season Bernie took on the team as U9's in their own right, taking them all the way to U17 when they ended in 2001. Take a look at their Team Page with a variery of photographs and their records of achievement. For more on other past teams, click on the Completed Teams link.

It is hoped, perhaps forlornly, that more parents and players involved in Youth Football will come to realise that its not just about winning. Anyone reading this and wondering what is meant by this should visit the FA Website
